From eVX to Creta EV and BE.05, India set for electric rush

India is set to witness an electric vehicle (EV) rush in the second half of the current fiscal with top original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) like Maruti Suzuki India, Hyundai Motor India, Mahindra & Mahindra, Kia India, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India and BYD India gearing up to introduce new models.
The mass electric passenger car space has not seen significant action till now in FY25. There have been only two notable launches. The country’s largest electric carmaker, Tata Motors, brought the Curvv.ev in August, while JSW MG Motor India drove the Windsor EV into the market last week.
The EV adoption rate is currently very low in the Indian car market, hovering around 2%. However, the government has set an EV penetration target of 30% for the passenger car segment by 2030.
According to analysts, the demand for electric cars is expected to improve with the introduction of more models, particularly from mass market OEMs.
Maruti will launch its maiden EV, the eVX, in Q4 FY25. The company has claimed that the eVX will be a premium model based on a new dedicated EV platform. It will be powered by a 60kWh battery pack with safe battery technology, providing a range of 500-550km on a single full charge.
Hyundai’s Chief Manufacturing Officer Gopalakrishnan CS recently told India Today that preparations have started at the company’s Sriperumbudur factory in Tamil Nadu for the production of the Creta EV, which will also be launched in Q4 FY25. The carmaker already offers the premium Ioniq 5 electric SUV.
The country’s leading SUV manufacturer, Mahindra, is very bullish about its EV prospects and expects electric models to have a share of up to 30% in its SUV portfolio by 2027, with an annual contribution of nearly 200,000 units to volume.
In Q4 FY25, Mahindra will launch the BE.05, the very first SUV from its electric-only BE brand. The BE.05 will be based on the INGLO EV platform, which will use components from Volkswagen Group’s modular electric drive matrix (MEB) platform. The company sells the XUV400 electric SUV at present.
While the Maruti Suzuki eVX, Hyundai Creta EV and Mahindra BE.05 will enter the market in Q4 FY25, three models — Kia EV9, Volkswagen ID.4 and BYD eMAX 7 — will be launched earlier in Q3 FY25.
The ID.4 will be Volkswagen’s first electric car in India. The EV9 will be Kia’s second premium electric SUV here after the EV6. BYD’s all-electric portfolio includes the e6 MPV, the Atto 3 SUV and the Seal premium sedan. The upcoming eMAX 7 will replace the e6.
